How the plugin / theme works
That’s the plugin, but it adds the theme for the bbPress forums. How exactly does that work?
bbPress is a forum plugin. But to represent forums, you need a lot of templates for different elements. And due to the specific nature of these templates, the theme cannot rely on them to provide these templates. Therefore, bbPress contains its own theme templates and a styling package to load templates that are required regardless of the theme.
Yes, the theme can override bbPress’s default templates, but if the theme doesn’t, the default templates will be used. What’s great here is that bbPress allows other plugins to register additional forum templates / styling packages. And, the package completely replaces the standard package, and all of the standard templates and styling come from the new package.
